Hi, welcome to Sew and Serge
Sew and Serge is a sewing blog for two kinds of people: anyone shopping for their very first sewing machine, and anyone who owns a serger and is still working out how to use it.
It’s written by one home sewist who has been sewing for about 15 years. I post here as The Sew and Serge Team.
How I learned
My husband’s grandmother taught me to sew. Over the years I’ve sewn on a hand-crank Singer and an electric Brother, and I still remember how confusing the start was: all the machines, all the parts, and all the words nobody explains.
Why this site exists
I started sewing because I wanted to make my own clothes, bags, and toys, and that’s still what I love most about it. Sew and Serge is where I share what I’ve learned along the way, written the way I wish someone had explained it to me when I started.
What you’ll find here
- Help choosing a first sewing machine, written for people who don’t know the words yet
- Serger guides for the machine that intimidates almost everyone at first
- The basics that trip beginners up: needles, thread, bobbins, tension, patterns, and the tools worth owning
A few promises
- I keep it honest. I only write “I’ve used this” about things I’ve actually used. When something is general advice rather than my own experience, I’ll say so.
- I don’t sell sewing machines. Sew and Serge is supported by ads, not by any brand, so no company pays for what I recommend.
- I fix mistakes. If you spot something wrong or out of date, please tell me through the Contact page and I’ll correct it.
Happy sewing,
The Sew and Serge Team
